A Garden Harvest: Let There Be Carrots

I was having a depressed day, and so I did what I like to do when I’m depressed: go and pick things in the garden and eat them.

My garden has gotten out of control.  The tomatoes have annexed EVERYTHING.  Seriously!  They crawled out of their containers, into the beans, into the zucchini, into the carrots, and out several feet into the driveway.

Take a look:

The black tarp extends two feet from the edge of the driveway – this is my anti-weeding effort, and it’s working well.  But LOOK AT THAT.  And I’ve gotten 15 lbs of tomatoes so far!

You can see here that I cut the corn to let the zucchini have a chance.  That giant mass of greenery in the middle is the tomatoes.

My potatoes have died, unfortunately.  One of the storms tipped them all over and they didn’t recover.

But!  I digress.  I was feeling bad, and on the spur of the moment I checked to see if the carrots and parsnips were ready.  The parsnips weren’t, but look at this:

I couldn’t wait.  I picked them all!  The itty bitty ones I tossed, but everything at least the size of my pinky finger I kept, and now  my husband has tons of safe carrots to eat!  🙂

And of course my tomatoes from this picking:

I think I’m going to focus on tomatoes and carrots next year.  They’re definitely the ones who gave me the  most reward.

Also, it didn’t occur to me that zucchini and cucumbers would cross polinate:

They smell like cucumber but taste like zucchini, and everything from both plants has spines

The corn was pretty much a bust though.  I boiled it and ate the individual kernals that sprouted, but not much to it.

I got one good ear that dried before I realized I could pick it, and the rest was like this.

How is your garden going?  Inquiring minds want to know!  *smile*

  1. I wish I had green fingures … your description brought out the excitement which I never understood before. My garden is my family… which is also producing mixed results. Loved the photos thank you!

  2. My garden is sort of an extension of my paranoia issues that I have, because my paranoia always comes in WE’RE GOING TO STARVE as the predominant flavor. So having a garden is calming, and harvest season makes me ridiculously happy and relaxed. I try something new every year and often fail, but I’m learning! 🙂 Thank you for the comment! You made my day.
