My father-in-law caught a deer! No photos included, ya’ll, because yuck.
We went over on Sunday to see him, and he was in the porch, deer hung up, butchering it. It was pretty gory.
Which, I thought it would be harder than it was to see the deer. But it really didn’t bother me other than the blood smell.
He’s tried several other years but only occasionally caught one, so he’s happy.
And here’s the weird thing – he tossed the lungs up on the hill and a few other bits for scavengers.
He was expecting possums or the such.
No.
It was dozens of tiny Chickadees going after it!

Like, we know in our heads that birds are really mini dinosaurs, but still. You think of song birds as sweet, little birds that eat seeds and brighten up your feeders in the winter.
Not tiny little predators.
So, points for being opportunivores, Chickadees, but that’s just creepy.
Are you hunting this year? Have you had any luck? I don’t have the stomach or inclination for it, personally, but I know a lot of people really enjoy it. Do you prefer bow or rifle… or even powder hunting? Inquiring minds want to know!
They love suet from my feeders. Doesn’t surprise me at all. All kinds of birds will work a carcass.
I guess I hadn’t made the connection between suet blocks and this!
