Hospice Update

My mother’s nickname is Otter. She competed in college level swimming, and earned it there.

You may have seen my post where I explained that I canceled the preorder for Captured Pawn to care for my mother in hospice.

Currently my mom is having a very slow heart attack. Heart event? She has chosen not to seek emergency care and has a do not resuscitate, so we have no real way of knowing how bad this is.

She’s sleeping a lot. I’m spending a lot of time with her and putting my best face forward for her. Right now, my husband is holding down the fort (with a new dog integrating no less!) while my dad, brother, and I orbit her. She has friends visiting, hospice workers, her pastor, so many visitors, and we have been so lucky to have support. Because of all of her caretaking help, she has had NO bed sores and stayed clean and comfortable and feeling presentable despite her immobility.

She’s delighted that Auryn Hadley dropped Pheonix’s Fire early and is trying to read it as fast as she can, but, again, she’s in pain and sleeping a lot. Auryn, I can’t say thank you enough for dropping your book early. This is likely the last book of yours she will read, and I’m so happy that she can see Ayla’s journey into her own person (which I saw early on your Patreon). So, thank you. I know you pushed hard to get it out before the preorder date.

So, right now we’re in a holding pattern. This could pass, and she could continue as she has been for the last month or so. Or it may take a turn for the worst. I don’t know.

I’m editing slowly as I have time, but I’ll admit it’s a struggle to focus right now. So, I’m sorry. Captured Pawn is coming, but I’m not at my best, and I’m struggling.

People have been asking me, what can I do? Locally neighbors are helping shovel snow and making sure to pull the trash and recycling out (remember my husband shattered his leg), which has been amazing. Our church has been bringing snacks and stopping to talk to me when I’m walking our dogs. Dogs don’t care what’s going on, if you don’t walk them they’ll eat your couch.

More distantly? That’s harder. I’d suggest reading my two books in Kindle Unlimited if you haven’t already. If you have KU, it costs you nothing but time and every single time I see pages turn in my dashboard it’s uplifting and encourages me to focus and keep editing. It’s encouragement a page at a time. If you like them, suggest them to other people.

If that’s not a fit for you, I would love to hear about your comfort reads. What do you read to feel better? Right now I’m reading a lot of zombie post apocalyptic- oddly enough that’s my comfort genre. Suggestions are welcome, and your patience with me is appreciated more than you can know.

  1. Love you cuz! Sending you much love. Enjoy the small things…this is so HARD…allow yourself to feel whatever you’re feeling and practice SELF CARE so you can continue to be there! I read a lot of paranormal books to decompress. Love Amanda Lee and Robyn Peterman. They have strong female characters and a bit of snark which I love.
