I Want Fish, But I’m a Miser

Every Friday, one of our local bars has a fish fry, including grilled fish which is my favorite, and sometimes I really, really want to go.

But I’m cheap.

The meal is expensive, and I figure if I can afford to eat out I should tip well.  (Often, I tip well because the people around us are being jerks to the waitress!)

I want the fish, but I’m just too cheap to spend for it.

I’ve never cooked fish.

Shocking, I know!  I’ve cooked shrimp, and I’ve cooked fish sticks, but neither of these are the same at all.

But I really wanted fish this weekend, and with our budget it wasn’t going to happen.

SO, I put on my big girl pants, Googled how to cook fish, and bought frozen fish from the grocery store.  Thawed it in a bowl of warm water, baked it in the oven, and you know what?

It was delicious.  It didn’t smell fishy at all and was very mild flavored – I think we bought haddock?

9/10 would do again.

The downside to this though is that we had it at my in-laws’ cabin, and it turns out that my mother-in-law hates fish.

So she had salad that we prepared, and we ate fish.  I would have thought to bring something else if I had known she couldn’t stand fish, you know?

Part of the reason I love fish is kind of silly though… I have been introduced to the wonder that is tarter sauce.

I generally won’t eat any sauce that looks like it might have mayonnaise in it (not a fan), but I tried it recently, and it was really good!

So I may be looking for excuses to eat it.

Shh!  I won’t tell if you won’t.

Do you like fish?  Are there any foods that you love that the people around you can’t stand?  Do you have any fish recipes?  Inquiring minds want to know!  *smile*
