Storytime: Times Renee Was Oblivious

I went camping with the Girl Scouts as a kid, several times. One time we were camping by the Rainbow River, I think, and we flooded out like crazy and had to evacuate at 2 in the morning with none of our stuff, literally wading through shin deep fast running water to get to the vehicles.

This is not that story.

We went camping at Canyon Lake. Now, I was an oblivious kid who did not watch TV and was not familiar with camping tropes. I’d camped out in our backyard a few times, and that was it. Never with a group.

Never with Girl Scouts.

I did not realize telling scary stories around the fire was a thing.

You see, I thought those axe murderer stories were real and I was PISSED that they’d let us camp in a campground with loose axe murderers!

When I got home, mom asked how it was, and I went off on dangerous camping situations and how irresponsible they were to have us camp there… and mom cracked up.

And that’s how I found out that you tell scary stories around the fire when camping.
