HARD Freeze and Chickie Fears!

We got down to -15 F which caused some advance panicking.

It is my chickens’ first winter

Some of them are itty bitty bantams.

Their coops are sheltered but not heated, and the doors don’t close.

*flail*

So I made a rush order at Tractor Supply for two radiant heaters, two heated dog dishes, and some outdoor extension cord splitters.

We drove in a blizzard to get there, which was crazy.

Got home and installed them best as I could.

That night was still in the low teens.

The next day we went out and worked out the kinks. I laid the heater on it’s side in the bantam’s coop so they could sit on it. It’s not hot enough to burn them, and I hoped it would keep their toes safe.

I was seriously scared they wouldn’t survive this.

Then it froze SO HARD.

I came out today and they had survived! They were salty and mad at me, and perfectly fine. The heated dog dishes froze over, but the older chicken waterers didn’t so go figure.

Yay for safe chickies!
